My first Jimmy Garoppolo cards

I’ve kept a watchful eye on QB Jimmy Garoppolo since his college days at Eastern Illinois University. Sadly he was drafted by my least favorite team: the Patriots. There was rumors of him being traded to the Bears but nothing ever came of it. Garoppolo was born in Arlington Heights, IL which would have been quite the homecoming had he made it to the Bears. Thankfully he got traded to the 49ers who I think will really turn things around next year with Jimmy running things.

I am mainly interested in collecting him because he went to Eastern Illinois University which is my alma mater. Other notable football players from EIU are Sean Payton (currently the head coach of the Saints) and Tony Romo (former Cowboys QB and now TV analyst). Not bad company! I figured I’d better get a few of his cards before they skyrocket. I searched around eBay and a lot of stuff was way out of my budget especially the graded cards. I ended up bidding on a 9-card lot of ungraded 2014 cards and eventually won the auction.

I really like the cards where he’s in his Eastern Illinois uniform. I will have to pick up a few more of them down the road.

eBay – 1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa RC

I’m getting closer to completing my PSA graded Sammy Sosa rookie card set. I found a PSA 9 Leaf card on eBay for $10 w/free shipping. That was the limit I was shooting for so I pulled the trigger. It was scheduled to be delivered today and despite getting the USPS alert for it being delivered, it was not in the mailbox.

I immediately knew the mail carrier had accidentally put it in the wrong mailbox. I checked the USPS website and they don’t allow a missing mail complaint until 7 business days after the item shipped. Now it was up to my neighbors to do the right thing and deliver the package to me or at least give it back to USPS.

While eating dinner this evening, I heard a knock on the door. My next door neighbor had found the package in his mailbox and returned it to me unopened. Awesome!

This card puts me at 50% in the PSA Sosa rookie card set. The rest have been ordered and I’m anxiously awaiting their arrival by the end of the month.

eBay – 1990 Upper Deck Sammy Sosa RC

I’m sure everyone is sick of me posting about Sosa, but I enjoy collecting his cards. Today’s mailbox contained the 1990 Upper Deck Sammy Sosa rookie card. This one is graded PSA 9 which is what my other graded Sosa cards have been. This card had a scary journey apparently as it was delayed a day by USPS for an unknown reason. It also had a slight hole in the bubble mailer, ironically right where it said do not crush!

The card and slab seemed in great condition though so the bubble mailer did its job. I like this card because Sosa has a nice big smile on his face. He had one of the best smiles in baseball.

This card puts me at 37.5% completion of the 8-card PSA Sosa rookie card set.
